County Age Group squads celebrate season of sucsess

Last Saturday saw the coaches, parents and players of Northamptonshire’s County Age group squads gather at the County Ground to celebrate successes of the 2017 season. This had been a particularly fine season for the County, with the Under 17 Boys sharing the County Championship title with Sussex (our first victory at this age group for 20 years), rain having precluded a definitive result. The Under 13 Girls also qualified for the ECB national finals for the first time in the county’s history by winning their league.

In front of a packed Old Speckled Hen Suite BBC Radio Northampton’s Andrew Radd detailed the outstanding individual achievements of our young players. All players Under 13 who scored a 50 or took four wickets in an innings, and over 13 who scored a hundred or took 5 wickets in an innings, received an award, along with Batsman, Bowler and Players’ player of the year at all age groups.

Intended guest of honour Saif Zaib was unable to attend, so it was fantastic that departing Steelback legend Mohamed Azharullah was able to step in at very late notice, taking questions from the floor on his illustrious career with Northants. Gareth Wade, a young fast bowler at the beginning of his professional career, was also on hand to present some of the awards.

The two big awards of the evening went to very deserving individuals. The Girls Player of the year went to Flo Miller, who had scored more runs than any player in England in leading our Under 13 girls to a national final in her first year with Northants. The Dorothy Radd shield was presented by son Andrew to Connor Haddow, whose 36 wickets, including 12-60 vs Nottinghamshire, helped propel our U17s to the ECB title.

We congratulate all our County Age Group players who represented Northamptonshire with pride and distinction this year, in particular those who won awards on the night. Attention now moves to 2018, and we wish all our young players luck as the strive to emulate and improve on the achievements of this year
