Match Report

A closely-matched encounter ended with a close finish as Geddington Cricket Club Under 15’s beat Overstone Park Under 15’s in the penultimate ball of the game in the first match of the Under 15’s Northamptonshire County Club Championship Finals Day.

Both teams batted very well, with Geddington batting first, scoring a cool 139-5 in their 19.5 overs. Benedict Harvey top scored for Geddington, with 50 off 44 balls. Joshua Knight also hit a strong 36 off 29, as Geddington set out a strong target for their opponents to chase. Archie Dunkley was a thorn in their side throughout however, with great bowling figures of 3/22, including the wickets of openers Akaash Baiju and Zachary Byers for 8 and 5 respectively.

Overstone then put up a very strong fight in their innings to chase the target set out to them by their opponents, helped by Ethan Laporta’s superb 51 off just 34. Laporta had a strong hand in Overstone’s performance and deserves praise for his excellent innings. George Cook also scored 17 runs for Overstone, however eventually they slipped to a defeat that will be hard to swallow given the effort they put into the chase. Cole McWilliam (2/20) and Archie Colwill (2/23) took 2 wickets each for Geddington as they came away with a hard-fought victory.

Match Result: Geddington Cricket Club won by 5 wickets.

Match Report

After Old Grammarians Cricket Club pulled out of the tournament due to a lack of players, the Vitality U15 Club Cup was contested between just 3 clubs, Geddington Cricket Club, Brackley Town Cricket Club and Overstone Park Cricket Club.

Having earnt a hard-fought victory in their first match of the day, over Overstone Park Cricket Club, Geddington had to simply beat Brackley Town to claim the Northamptonshire County Club Championship…

It turned out to be a dominant victory for Geddington Under-15’s in a match that they deserved to win. Brackley Town Under-15’s had no answer to the batting and bowling performances of the Geddington players as they wrapped up the game, and the 2018 Northamptonshire County Club Championship in very impressive circumstances.

Geddington’s cause was helped by a strong bowling performance that restricted Brackley Town to 87 all out within just under 16 overs. Akaash Baiju (3/5) and Joshua Knight (3/9) helped themselves to 3 wickets each as Brackley struggled to gather momentum and pace, not helped by a mid-order collapse in which they lost 6 wickets for just 27 runs. Harry Bartlett’s 17 and Ike Arrand’s 11 were Brackley’s top scorers in an otherwise modest batting performance.

However, it was Geddington’s batting performance that really propelled them to victory as they chased down 87 in just 6.2 overs, which equates to a run rate of 14. Cole McWilliam hit an impressive 31 off 17 balls, with Sam Smith getting an equally impressive 20 off just 9 balls to lead Geddington to victory in nearly no time at all. Alistair Brown (1/20) took Brackley’s only wicket in the match, clean bowling Smith, but in the end, it did not matter as Geddington romped to victory, by 9 wickets, leaving Brackley to wonder where it all went wrong.

Match Result: Geddington Cricket Club won by 9 wickets

Summary

The eventual champions of the Vitality Under-15 National Club Championship 2018 were Geddington, having won both of their games. In second were Overstone Park with a win and a loss on their record and in third were Brackley Town, after they lost both of their matches in the round robin tournament.

Geddington will now move on into the regional finals, where they will face the winners of the Huntingdonshire county cup final, on Sunday the 8thof July. Geddington will go into that game with confidence off the back of this tournament victory, and will feel they have a very strong chance of progressing even further into the competition.
