Northamptonshire Girls League

In 2015 Northamptonshire will be embarking on an exciting new initiative for Girls cricket, by launching its first ever hard-ball leagues at Under 11 and Under 14 levels. This follows the great strides made in Girls participation at local clubs, evidenced by the unprecedented level of interest shown in the County Girls Under 11 squad, set up in 2014. There was a concern from the coaches that there was a growing number of girls who were not quite ready for County Cricket, but whose development required them to play a more active part in the game than could be afforded by simply playing in their club’s boys sides. This, an overwhelming desire not to lose the interest being shown in the game by a whole new generation of girls, and the realisation that early adoption of the basics was a key indicator of future achievement prompted Northants Recreational Cricket to make a Girls League one of its major strategic priorities.

Under 11 and Under 14, were selected as age groups following consultation with clubs in the county on their demography. This consultation also led us to decide to run both divisions, for the initial year at least, as 8-a-side pairs format leagues. This has the dual benefit of making it easy for clubs putting out sides for the first time to raise a full team, while also ensuring every player gets a high level of exposure to all facets of the game. It was also strongly emphasised by the clubs that they wanted their league to be developmental in focus, and the competition rules have been drafted in such a way as to encourage this over a win at all costs mentality, which has been shown to discourage girls in the past.

The teams entering the competition in 2015 have been confirmed as

Under 14 Under 11
Bedfordshire Cricket Board Geddington CC
Burton Latimer Town CC Grendon & Prims CC
Stony Stratford CC North West Northants
Thrapston CC Stony Stratford CC
Westbury CC Westbury CC

We are particularly pleased to that Geddington, Grendon and North West Northants (an amalgamation of Guilsborough and West Haddon, East Haddon and Brixworth Cricket Clubs) will be putting out competitive girls teams for the first time. In addition, Bedfordshire Cricket, with whom we have always had close ties at girls level, are entering a development side as a step towards full County Age Group cricket.

All the clubs entering will be keen to accept new girls, so if you know somebody, or indeed are somebody who wants to be involved, please contact the key contacts at the relevant club below.
